Varanasi, situated in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, is one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities, with roots tracing back to the 11th century B.C. Revered as India’s spiritual epicenter, Varanasi draws countless Hindu devotees who seek to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges and perform final rites for the deceased. The city is also known for its labyrinthine lanes, which are dotted with around 2,000 temples, most notably the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Ayodhya, located in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya district, is recognized as the legendary birthplace of Lord Rama. As the central stage of the epic Ramayana, it holds immense religious and mythological significance for Hindus.
Bodh Gaya, a small village in Bihar, stands as one of Buddhism’s holiest pilgrimage destinations. It is home to the iconic Mahabodhi Temple Complex, built on the spot where Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. A direct descendant of that tree continues to flourish at the site today, accompanied by several other sacred landmarks, including a lotus pond and international monasteries.
